How to Choose Safe, Project-Grade Electrical Fittings

Selecting the right fittings isn’t just a box-tick for submittals—it protects people, assets, and schedules. In this guide, we break down the essentials: standards, ratings, materials, installation realities, and the documentation you should insist on before anything reaches site.

1) Start with Standards & Proof

Always verify IEC/BS compliance on the datasheet and product label. For example, IEC 60670 for boxes, IEC 61386 for conduits, and relevant IP/IK classifications. Ask suppliers for a Declaration/Certificate of Conformity, test reports, and where applicable local authority approvals. No paperwork, no purchase.

2) Specify the Right Ratings

Match the environment, not just the drawing. For outdoor and plant rooms, ensure suitable IP (ingress) and IK (impact) ratings. Consider UV stability, temperature range/derating, corrosion resistance, and—where there’s wash-down—sealing that survives cleaning chemicals.

3) Materials & Build Quality

Use GI/HDG steel or quality polycarbonate enclosures as the application demands. For terminations, specify tinned copper lugs/ferrules sized to conductor CSA. For cable entries: brass/nickel-plated glands for armoured, nylon/PA for indoor non-armoured, and proper gaskets (EPDM/NBR) for lasting seals.

4) Capacity, Heat & Safety Margins

Terminal/rail ratings should comfortably exceed the circuit rating. Check short-circuit/breaking capacity where applicable and allow for ventilation/spacing around heat-generating devices (contactors, soft starters, VFDs). Confirm earthing/bonding points on metallic enclosures.

5) Installation Realities

Plan cable entry positions and bend radii early, include spreader plates/anchors for hollow substrates, and leave service space for safe maintenance. Clear labeling and accessible terminals save hours during T&C.
